Retrospection: Looking Back at 2020

Dear readers,

This past year must have been difficult for a lot of you for various reasons. From attempting to master the various technological tools and platforms and stay motivated during online learning, not being able to visit your home country and relatives, and having to be flexible with a last-minute changes of plans due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic to handling the uncertainty of whether IB exams will be held for the current seniors, trying not to go insane due to boredom during quarantine and lockdowns, and reading about all the tragic health, economic, and political events that happened around the world, all of you have overcome many of these, perhaps coming out a bit worse for wear. You should be proud of the resilience that we are sure many of you have shown. Considering what an eventful year 2020 was, we – ISHCMC Inquirer leaders – believe that “Retrospection: Looking Back at 2020” is a fitting theme for the 2020-2021 academic year’s first edition.

ISHCMC Inquirer is a well-established Creativity and Service group for students from grades 6 to 12. Our goal as an after-school SA/CAS group is to keep the ISHCMC community informed with interesting, age-appropriate articles and encourage students’ passion for journalism and the development of writing and designing skills. This year, we made the decision to move our magazine to a website, which eliminates printing costs and is more accessible and environmentally-friendly.

Retrospection is the act of looking back on past events and contemplating them. Retrospection is important because it enables understanding and change for the better. ISHCMC Inquirer members have worked extremely hard over the past few months to find positive ways of viewing 2020 in the hope that our articles will energize you to reflect on your own personal experiences with a newfound perspective and look forward to the rest of 2021 with optimism. Here, you will find a variety of articles, from interviews on students’ and teachers’ experiences with online learning and quarantine to tips on staying productive while still maintaining good mental health.

Enjoy reading,
